Commission a Painting by Ian Hansen
Bring your maritime story to life on canvas
The Commissioning Process
Commissioning a painting by Ian Hansen is a highly personal and rewarding experience. Whether you wish to commemorate a beloved yacht, capture a moment in naval history, or present a meaningful gift, Ian works closely with you to ensure your vision is honoured in every brushstroke.
Here’s how the process works:
1. Initial Enquiry
Get in touch via the contact form, phone or email with your idea—be it a vessel, regatta, historic scene, or even a cherished family boat. Ian will discuss your vision, the type of scene you have in mind, and how best to bring it to life.
2. Reference Material & Concept
You may already have photographs, memories, or documents related to the subject. Ian reviews these carefully to shape an authentic and atmospheric composition. If you’re seeking a historical work, Ian is experienced in conducting detailed research to ensure historical accuracy—right down to rigging, uniforms, and sea conditions of the period.
“Many of my historical paintings involve weeks of study—naval archives, ship plans, old photographs—to honour the integrity of the scene,” says Ian.
3. Project Confirmation
Once the concept is agreed upon, Ian schedules the commission into his studio timeline. Each work is given the time and attention it deserves.
4. Studio Progress
Ian may share progress photos during the painting process if desired. This offers a rare glimpse into the techniques and layers that bring a maritime scene to life on canvas.
5. Final Review & Delivery
When the painting is complete, you’ll have the opportunity to view images before final delivery. The work is then carefully packaged and shipped, or delivered in person if local. Framing can also be arranged on request.
